Radiographs, or X-rays, use electromagnetic radiation directed towards the body to highlight objects within. They can detect abnormalities including skeletal fractures, soft tissue damage, foreign bodies and dental disease. Equine, bovine and other livestock radiography is used for diagnostic purposes as well as for pre-purchase examinations to confirm that an animal is sound.
Radiographs do require the patient to remain completely still to work correctly, necessitating sedation and sometimes full anesthesia in many cases. The duration of sedation or anesthesia is usually short and patient recovery is swift.
